The older we become the more likely it is that we experience hearing loss or problems with our vision. With nearly one in every three adults between the ages of 65 and 74 struggling with hearing loss and an increased likelihood for vision impairments, having Medicare coverage that includes preventative and necessary treatments is important for many Medicare beneficiaries.
That’s why one of the most common questions regarding Medicare is: does Medicare coverage include hearing, vision, and dental benefits?
Traditional Medicare, also known as Part A and Part B of Original Medicare, does not cover hearing, vision, or dental care. This is where additional healthcare coverage comes into play, like Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplemental plans.
Dental Coverage:
Most dental care procedures, such as cleanings, filling, or tooth extractions, are not covered by Original Medicare nor are services like dentures, dental plates, or other dental devices. Although, there are rare situations when dental care is received in a hospital for which Medicare may provide some coverage.
Medicare Advantage plans, however, do provide coverage for both preventative and some restorative dental services. Most Medicare Advantage plans provide comprehensive coverage, if you stay in-network, and cover up to $1,500 – $2,500 of dental expenses per year. Just keep in mind you will still have to pay for part of most services through coinsurance.
While most Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap plans, typically don’t cover dental services, there are a few Supplement plans that offer pre-negotiated discounts that can add up to significant out-of-pocket savings. Other plans might allow you to add additional dental coverage for an added premium.
Alternatively, you can choose to purchase a stand alone dental plan.
Vision Coverage:
Since Original Medicare does not cover basic vision benefits, many Medicare Advantage plans offer vision coverage as a supplemental benefit.
This means that instead of paying 100% of costs with Original Medicare, you’ll be covered for the cost of routine eye exams, as well as given allowances for eye-glasses and contact lenses.
Hearing Coverage:
In most cases, people pay 100% out-of-pocket costs for hearing aids and exams if they only have Original Medicare. Medicare Supplement plans also do not generally offer hearing-aid coverage, so many people choose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
With Medicare Advantage Plans, much of the costs for hearing aids are covered, as are exams to be fitted for hearing aids.
